William Henry Harrison Blodgett was a farmer and also kept a store in South Pomfret.
His youngest son, Harry Orange, was later well known for his hardware store on Main Street
in Fredonia. He probably learned the business from his father.
Not many details are known about the life of William Henry Harrison. It is hoped that
some of his descendants can help fill in this picture in more detail.
It was a common practice in the Blodgett family to name a child after a well respected
relative (many times an uncle, aunt or grandparent). It seems that this practice also extended
to presidents. I'm sure there is a story behind this, but unfortunately we we are no longer privy
to the tale. This much we do know. William Henry Harrison was running for president in 1840.
He would win by a landslide, but die in office in on April 12, 1841, after serving only 31 days
as President. William Henry Harrison Blodgett was born in the midst of this election. So it
appears that his parents, Willard and Rebecca, were Whigs.
Their Children
Willam Henry Harrison and Lucina had 4 children, three sons and one daughter. They all lived
a full life, marrying and raising families in and around Fredonia, NY. The oldest, Martha Emaline
had three husbands and one child. The next, George Bird had two wives, four children and lived
to age 77. The next, Benjamin Willard had one wife, two children and lived to the age of 93.
The youngest, Harry Orange had one wife, eight children and live to age 82. It is Harry Orange
who we know the most about, as several of his descendants still attend reunions regularly,
some traveling from as far as Florida (and one from Texas) to do so.
