  • - Parents: 1st Lt. Jonathan I and Sarah (Foster) Lilly

Aaron was born in Stafford, Conn just 4 years prior to the Revolutionary War. As his father
was in the militia during most of the war, Silas would have been absent from their home during
his early childhood. Aaron's older siblings probably had to assume adult responsibilities to fill in
for their missing father. This may have been the case with his older brother Josiah, who was
killed in a mill accident at age 15, when Aaron was just 3 years old.

Aaron married Sarah Lilly in 1797, just three days prior to his 25 birthday. Sarah had the most
historically notable ancestry of any marriage of our Blodgett ancestors. Through her mother she
is descended from Myles Standish (he is Sarah's great, great, great grandfather). Through her
father, from Lt. Henry Bowen of Roxbury, Mass. and Woodstock, Conn., who in turn is descended
from Edward III, King of England and Jean Le Bon, King of France.

Aaron and Sarah were married in Ashfield, Mass and lived there for about 13 years. Just after the
birth of their son Willard they moved to Providence, Saratoga County, NY to join Aaron's father,
Silas who had moved there at least 10 years earlier. They are both listed there in the 1810 census.
They then moved to Hadley, NY where their last two children Deforest and Emily were born.

In 1817, when their youngest daughter Emily was just 2 years old, Aaron's wife Sarah died. At the
time their children would have been ages 19, 16, 14, 12, 7, 4 and 2. It must been a struggle for
Aaron to raise this large family alone, but Aaron (then age 44) never remarried. His father Silas
and mother Abigail were also living in Hadley, so they may have helped at this time.

Sometime after Sarah's death, Aaron moved one last time and settled on a farm known as
"Blodgett Hill" above Corinth, Saratoga County, NY. where he lived his remaining years.

Their Children

Aaron and Sarah had 10 children, three of whom died in infancy or early childhood.
The other seven lived to marry and rear at least 28 children in total. Four of them living
to 70 to 80 years of age. Several of these siblings (Abigail, Almon, Abram Stocking and Willard)
comprised the Blodgett family that moved to Chautauqua County as pioneers in the early 1820's.
