Willard was born in Ashfield, Mass. but his parents moved to Providence, Saratoga Co., NY
while he was still an infant. A couple years later, his parents moved to Hadley, Saratoga
County NY. Not long after this move, his mother Sarah died, leaving his father to raise
Willard and his six siblings alone. Willard was only 7 years old at the time. But soon after
her death Abram's grandparents, Silas and Abigail, joined his father in Hadley (possibly to
help his father raise this large family).
As a young man (probably around 30 years old) he went to Chautauqua Co., NY to visit his
older brother and sister Abram Stocking and Abigail Turk, who had moved there several years
before. He apparently liked what he found there, because he built himself a log cabin near
his siblings and then returned to Saratoga Co, where he had left his fiance, Rebecca Gibbs.
This adventure must have taken some time, for Rebecca had nearly given him up for dead.
All ended well, as they soon married. He then brought his young bride to Pomfret to take up
residence in their new log cabin in June of 1832. They were to live there in South Pomfret
the rest of their lives.
Sometime later Rebecca's parents Robert and Eleanor Gibbs moved from Saratoga County and
joined them in South Pomfret. Robert was born in England on Mar 16, 1784 and emmigrated
to America in 1802. He died Jul 20, 1862 in South Pomfret at the age of 78. Eleanor was born
in New York on Feb 1, 1787 and died Mar 13, 1862 in South Pomfret. They are both buried in
Old East Main Cemetery, Fredonia.
The following is from the Fredonia Censor Wed, Mar 11, 1891:
"Died in South Pomfret Feb 21, 1891, Willard Blodgett aged 80 years, 10 months, 6 days.
He came from Saratoga County to this town in June 1832, and settled on the farm where
he died. His wife and two sons, Orange and William survive him. Until about his 75th year
he had never known what it was to be ill, but always enjoyed the most robust health.
For the last five or six years he was a suffering invalid, but patient, uncomplaining,
easy to please, and at last passed away without pain or suffering."
Rebecca lived another 11 years and died at her son Orange Blodgett's home on May 23, 1902.
Their Children
Willard and Rebecca had 3 children, two sons and one daughter. Martha Emily died in her
teens of "quick comsumption", while both Orange Charles and William Henry Harrison married,
raised families and lived into their sixties. Orange Charles had one child, Willard Orange,
who disappeared at sea in Florida in his twenties without marrying. Willard's youngest son,
William Henry Harrison had four children. These children, in turn, all raised families.
The current descendants of Willard Blodgett are all descended through this youngest son,
William Henry Harrison.
