Silas was born and raised in Stafford, Conn., the seventh of ten children of Josiah and Elizabeth
Blodgett. He was of the generation that fought in the Revolutionary War, and was a major
participant in that historic struggle, along with his brother Paul (as were a great many Blodgetts).
Silas entered the War as a sergeant during the Lexington Alarm, and fought from the first major
battle, Bunker Hill, through the last battle, Yorktown. By that time he had risen to the rank of
captain and commanded a company of troops.
Details of his war record are as follows:
Sergeant, Lexington Alarm, 1775:
2nd Lt. 2nd Connecticut Regiment, Continental Line, May - Dec 1775;
1st Lt. 2nd Connecticut Regiment, Continental Line, 1775 - June 1778;
Capt. 6th Company of the Alarm List, 22nd Connecticut Regiment, 1781
As he fought at Bunker Hill, he may well have been bivouacked along with most of the American
troops, on the Cambridge Common prior to the battle. This is the same town Common where his
great, great grandfather, Thomas would have graised his livestock.
There is some contention in the written records as to the maiden last name of Silas's wife Abigail.
She is listed as Abigail Stocking in "Ten Generations of Blodgetts in America" by Edwin Blodgett
and several other documents, but these documents show no other records such as birth or parents.
In our records, compiled after extensive research by John Blodgett, this name is changed to
Abigail Kibbe and supporting records are added including birthdate, and Kibbe ancestors going back
to 1611. Unfortunately, the source records and notes as to the reasons for this name change have
not been found, and as Silas's grandson Abram has a middle name of "Stocking" (Blodgett's
commonly used a recent ancestor's name when giving their children a middle name), this is still
an open issue.
Silas and Abigail resided in Stafford until after the revolution, but by the census of 1790 they had
moved to Tolland, Conn. In 1793 they moved to Schoharie County, NY. and by 1800 resided in
Providence, Saratoga County, NY. By 1818 they were living in Hadley, NY. They may have moved
there to help their son Aaron (who had just lost his wife) raise his seven children. While living
in Hadley, Silas applied for his Revolutionary War pension. Silas wife Abigail died sometime after
the 1820 census. Silas then moved to Knox, Albany County, NY to live with his eldest daughter,
Sarah and her husband Amos Torrey. He died there at the age of 92 and is buried in the Torrey
plot in Knox Rural Cemetery, DAR Marker.
