Nellie Belle Blodgett was born exactly one year to the day before the start of the
civil war. Abraham Lincoln would be nominated for president by the republican party
just over a month after her birth. The Blodgett's of Chautauqua County seemed to make
it through the civil war with no loss of life. The Pierce family was not so fortunate.
Ichabod Jr and Harriet Pierce lost two of their four sons in the war.

Nellie Belle Blodgett grew up on her parents farm in Fredonia, NY.
Nellie married three times. She and her first husband, Clarence Carr divorced
after a relatively short time (we don't know the dates) and was she was widowed by
her other husbands, William Anscomb and John Peters.

Nellie Belle and Clarence Carr had one daughter, Mary Elizabeth, who remained with
Nellie Belle after the divorce. Clarence Carr moved to Buffalo in 1908, where he worked
as a carpenter and a grocer. His daughter from the marriage, Mary Elizabeth, went
to visit her father after she became an adult and became reaquainted with him.
They apparently redeveloped close ties, because Clarence (still residing in Buffalo)
died while visiting one of Mary's daughters, Ruth (Pyle) Hoffmann in Franklin, Pa.

Nellie Bell married William Henry Anscomb at her parent's home on Jan 17, 1881 or 1882.
William Anscomb was born in Kent, England and came to this country as a young man
age around 20) in about 1870. He was an upright and industious farmer, respected by all
who knew him. He and Nellie had one child together, Elmer Burr, to raise along with
May Elizabeth. Nellie Belle and William lived together in Pomfret for 25 years.
William died 1907 and is burried in Forest Hill cemetery, Fredonia.

As a widow, Nellie resided on Summer Street in Fredonia, NY. During this period she was
known as an excellent seamstress. One of the many items she sewed was the wedding dress
for Mabel (Bolling) Blodgett (who married Ralph Blodgett on April 26, 1916).
Nellie remarried again to John Peters and moved with him California.

Their Children

Nellie Belle Blodgett had two children. One child with her first husband Clarence Carr, and
another with her second husband William Anscomb. They both married and raised families,
but each one died at a relatively young age (44 and 30).
